Learn About Medicare

Medicare is a federally-sponsored health insurance program for people age 65 and older; people younger than 65 with a disability; people diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease; and those with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Medicare provides coverage for hospital care (Part A), medical services (Part B) and prescription drugs (Part D).

Medicare Part C, also known as Medicare Advantage, offers beneficiaries the option of receiving their Medicare benefits through private health plans.

The Carilion Clinic Medicare Health Plan brings you Medicare Advantage plans that offer you a close-knit community of care, with the doctors and pharmacists you trust in making decisions to help save you money and give you the care you need.

Medicare Advantage Plans are health plan options that are regulated by the Medicare program. If you join one of these plans, you generally get all your Medicare-covered healthcare through that plan. This coverage can include prescription drug coverage.

When you join Medicare Advantage Plans, you use the health insurance card that you get from the plan for your health care. In most of these plans, generally there are extra benefits and lower co-payments than in the Original Medicare Plan. However, you may have to see doctors that belong to the plan or go to certain hospitals to get services.

If you join a Medicare Advantage Plan, your Medigap policy won’t work. This means it won’t pay any deductibles, co-payments, or other cost-sharing under your Medicare Health Plan. Therefore, you may want to drop your Medigap policy if you join a Medicare Advantage Plan. However, you have a legal right to keep the Medigap policy.
